Finals Night Friday 9th December
Our Squash Club Championship was bigger than ever this year, with 45 players in the draw! We witnessed some great performances throughout with early upsets and 5 game thrillers. Matches were played with desire to win but in good spirit with a great atmosphere from start to finish.
We started December with our Semi-Finals which, despite the best efforts of all previous opponents, were down to top 4 seeds in the main draw. [6] Shaun Cramer def. [15] Jack Webb in four and Dan Mills def. Elliot Serruys in three to reserved their place on finals night. [2] Josh Hall def. [3/4] Sam Jones 11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5 and [1] Mark Bagnall def. [3/4] Keane Pye 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 to create a rematch of 2017 Club Championship final on Friday 9th.
On Finals Night, Shaun Cramer and Dan Mills started proceedings with a 12-10 first game of fast paced squash. With his 1-0 lead Shaun appeared to sharpen up taking the second 11-7 for 2-0 lead. With a big effort Dan found another level within himself to take the third 11-8 and looked to have the means to take this match to five. Shaun managed to match the Dan in the fourth closing out the plate final 3-1 to earn a spot on the club honours board. A great final for our spectators to witness!
To close the event, our finalists, top seed Mark Bagnall and second seed Josh Hall took to the court for a rematch 5 years on from their previous competitive match. A tight opening game set the bar high for the rest of match with a 12-10 scoreline in Josh’s favour. Mark quickly regrouped early in the second taking it swifty, 1 all. The tables turned again in the third 11-4 for Josh to take a 2-1 lead. Mark kept a 2-point cushion through the tightly contested fourth game. A flurry of quick point at the business end offered Josh the opportunity to close out the match but Mark stayed in it saving championship ball with a spectacular boast. Then closing out the fourth 12-10. With games tied at 2 all, the players returned to court for the fifth and final game with points back and forth until Josh closed out the match 11-8 claiming the title. Another great final for our audience, hopefully, concluding an enjoyable evening of Squash.
[6] Shaun Cramer def. Dan Mills 12-10, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8
[2] Josh Hall def. [1] Mark Bagnall 12-10, 5-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-8
Once again, we would like to thank every single entry for participating this year, brilliant turnout. Thank you to every spectator that made it to any one of the championship matches this year, many of whom volunteered to referee matches which is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to both runners up and champions. As a venue we are proud to host one of the largest club championships in the county and hope that we can continue to grow the draw next year and beyond! See you all in 2023.
